SURVEY.

For my primary research, I divided the participants into two groups: Koreans and Singaporeans, to explore whether there are any differences in their responses by country. This was driven by my curiosity about whether educational or regional characteristics might influence people's awareness of endangered animals.

Primary Research.

01 ONLINE SURVEY

49 Responses

KR 35 / SG 14

Overall responses :

SG :

Are you usually interested in endangered animals?

KR :

SG :

Are you familiar with the classification levels of endangered animals?

KR :

SG :

In the other three questions, excluding the most basic one, it can be inferred that more than half of the people have basic knowledge about endangered species.

On the other hand, 30-40% of people were unaware that endangered species have different classifications, and they found it difficult to write about three endangered animals in this case.

List three endangered animals you know.

KR :

SG :

In the last question, [List three endangered animals you know.], if the respondent was Korean, they often listed animals that were native to Korea, such as tigers, Korean water deer, or spoon-billed sandpipers, which have either gone extinct or are currently endangered.

In the case of Singaporeans, some responses included "I'm not sure if there are endangered animals in Singapore," and the majority of the answers focused on animals that live in the ASEAN region.

What causes any animal to become endangered?

KR :

SG :

Contrary to the initial expectation based on the data statistics that more than half would choose "all of them," less than 50% of people selected "all of them," and a significant portion of respondents chose only "climate change."

This statistic suggests that people have become more aware of endangered species due to the increasingly serious climate crisis. On the other hand, those who selected "all of them" are likely to have a more detailed knowledge of endangered species.

Have you ever tried to do something to support the conservation of endangered animals?

KR :

SG :

If Yes, what have you done so far to support ? (Donation, Volunteering..etc.)

KR :

SG :

*TOSS : a leading fintech company in South Korea

We can see that most people use donations to help endangered animals.

Besides campaigns, what do you think individuals can do to help protect endangered animals?

KR :

SG :

Overall, the responses seem to align closely with environmental protection, and particularly, the high number of mentions of "everyday sustainable practices" suggests that efforts by companies to reduce single-use plastic and the impact of public service advertisements have been effective.

After completing this survey, did you feel that you should pay more attention to endangered animals?

KR :

SG :

Surprisingly, many people answered "yes."

Considering human nature, where environmental issues often evoke a sense of guilt, and the social pressure to answer "yes" to public-interest surveys, this survey can still be seen as having had a positive impact. It suggests that, despite these influences, the responses indicate a general willingness to support environmental initiatives.

Limitation.

The limitations of conducting an online survey were clear. It was difficult to fully understand why people chose certain answers, especially for the final question: "After completing this survey, did you feel that you should pay more attention to endangered animals?" I became particularly curious about the reasons behind the responses of those who answered "Not sure" or "No."

Because the limitations of an online survey were so evident, I realized the need to conduct interviews to gain a more accurate understanding of people's thoughts.

Have you ever come across any news about endangered animal protection?

No, I haven’t.

Yes, I have.

I learned that polar bears are losing their habitat and that the dodo went extinct because of human greed.

I think schools and media should teach people how to respond if they come across an endangered animal. Also, more endangered animals should be shown through education and media so that more people can recognize them

AFTER SURVEY.

I found that while most people have a basic understanding of endangered animals,

Very few—like myself—know about them in detail, let alone their classification levels.

It was more difficult than I expected to find people who were well-informed about endangered animals.

As seen in the interviews, both participants were aware of the issue but lacked accurate knowledge.

I also realized that an average person's view tends to include a slight sense of guilt toward the environment as a human being.

Moreover, even among those who are interested in endangered animals, it seems that the only action they feel they can take is making donations.

Through this, I came to believe that the intention behind my FYP—to use an anthology format that encourages public participation and leaves a lasting impression of endangered animals—could be effective.

Ideally, it could even lead participants to support related organizations, such as wildlife protection centers.
